There are nearly 3.5billion active social media users, and every 6.4 seconds a new account has been created.

Many of us use our smartphones as companions. We update our friends, work colleagues and acquaintances on our daily movements and memorable moments in our lives.

At its core, social media is a powerful communication tool that has changed how individuals interact with one another. It speeds up how people exchange and share information, thoughts, and ideas across virtual networks. However, social media does have downsides. Some evidence suggests that its use in particular, its overuse — can negatively affect mental health in numerous ways.

In today's episode I speak to Niomi Smart, content creator, vlogger and the founder of Smart Skin. With a global following of more than 4.6 million across her digital and social media platforms, Niomi has spent all of her adult life navigating social media. We explore if it is possible to form a healthy relationship with social media and why this has been fundamental for Niomi.
